Soc 10- Preventing Injuries Flashcards
What are internal causes?
Overuse injuries, sudden injuries-caused by an individual performing the activity
What are external causes?
Foul play, impact with equipment, the play surfaces or opponents , inappropriate clothing and damages faulty equipment, very hot or cold weather
What are soft tissue injuries?
Joints are where 2 bones meet. They are particularly prone to injury because movement outside of their normal range can tear out overstretched tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage
What are sprains?
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprains in sport is a twisted or overstretched ankle
Sprains often occur when a ligament is stretched too far past the normal range of a joint, but can also be caused by falling or colliding with an opponent.
What is a strain?
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or a tendon.
Most common strains are in the hamstring and the back
What is torn cartilage?
Cartilege is a firm elastic substance which lines adjointing bones. It absorbs the impact on the bones while reducing the friction during sports/ activity.
Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long term overuse. They are tears at the joint.
What are the 4 types of fractures
Stress fracture
Compound fracture
In closed
Simple fracture
Greenstick break
Break only part across the bone
Transverse break
Break straight across
Impacted break
Pieces locked into each other
Comminuted break
Broken into more than two peices
Oblique break
Break at an angle
Tennis/ golfers elbow
Inflamation around the elbow due to overuse
How are abrasions caused
Abrasions are grazes caused by friction of the skin against rough surfaces e.g concrete playgrounds or artificial pitches
What are abrasions
Scraping the skin by rubbing skin on rough surfaces
