Why do people take performance enhancing drugs
Improve their performance
Some are encouraged to do so by their coaches of fellow atheletes
The reward of winning (the gold medal is said to be worth a million dollars in endorsements)

What are anabolic steroids
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testostrone and promote bone and muscle growth. They are used to enhance performance as they increase strength and allow the athelete to train harder and recover quicker. Side effects: increased risk of muscle injury, increased risk of heart attack and strokes, high blood pressure and even death.
What are beta blockers
Drugs used to control the heart rate and have a calming and relaxing effect. Used is sports where targets are used as it helps steadiness. Side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and nightmares.
What are Narcotics and Analgesics
Narcotics are drugs that effect mood or behaviour, including drousiness and relieving pain and analgesics elevate the rate of urine production. See more in book.
