Skill continuums Flashcards
Give the 6 different skill continuums
Fine-gross
open-closed
self paced-externally paced
simple-complex
low organizational-high organizational
discrete-serial-continous
Define and give examples of fine and gross skills
fine: involves small muscle movements which are often precise and accurate
Darts throw
Bowl in bowling
Snooker shot
Gross: involves large muscle movements in large muscle groups
Rugby tackle
100m sprint
Deadlift in weightlifting
Define and give examples of open and close skills
open: skills that are affected by the environment (unstable and changing)
A bat in cricket
Receiving a serve in tennis/badminton
Goal kick in football
Catching a baseball
tackle in football/rugby
Closed: skills that are unaffected by the environment
(predictable)
throw in darts
bowl in bowling
golf swing
javelin/discus throw
high jump
Define and give examples of self paced and externally paced skills
self paced: a skill in which the start is controlled by the performer (constant environment)
triple/long/high jump
discus/javelin throw
Serve in tennis/badminton
externally paced: a skill in which the start is controlled by external factors (changing environment)
Any sprinting events
A block in basketball
saving a penalty in football
Define and give examples of discrete serial and continuous skills
Discrete: skills that have a clear beginning and end
darts throw
volley in football
pass in basketball
serve in tennis
golf swing
Continuous: skills that have no clear beginning and end (the end of one movement is that start of the next)
swimming
running
cycling
Serial: when many discrete skills are grouped together to bring about movement
floor routine in gymnastics, because it involves spinning, rolling, jumping etc
Define and give examples of simple and complex skills
simple: skills that require little concentration and thought (low perceptual load, few decisions)
Swimming
short pass in football/basketball/netball
running
jumping
catching in basketball/netball
complex: skills that require a high concentration and thought (high perceptual load and many decisions)
bat in cricket
golf swing
vault in gymnastics
discus throw
define and give examples of high organisational and low organisational skills
low organisation: skills that can be broken down into many parts (sub routines can be easily seperated)
breathstroke in swimming
high/triple/long jump
high organisation: skills that can not be broken down into many parts (sub routines can not be easily seperated)
running
cycling
throw in basketball
