Guidance Flashcards
Define methods of guidance
Techniques used to enhance learning by offering assistance to a performer
Name the 4 different types of guidance
Manual
Visual
Verbal
Mechanical
Describe/Give characteristics of visual guidance
-Performer is given a demostration of the skill
-Creates a mental image for a beginner
-Can be videos,charts,books
-Should be repeated
-Can be given by coaches or peers
Advantages and disadvantages of visual guidance
Advantages:
-provides performer with mental image
-draws attention to key points
Disadvantages:
-learner may not be physically capable of completing task
-can demotivate performer if skill is too complex
Describe/Give characteristics of Verbal Guidance
-Performer is given an explanation of the task
-Can be used to correct technique and give advice
-Often used with visual guidance
-extrinsic form of feedback
Advantages and disadvantages of verbal guidance
Advantages:
-tactics can be explained
-feedback can be given immediately
Disadvantages:
-can be information overload for beginners
-learner may lose concentration
Describe/Give characteristics of manual guidance
-Involves physical support/manipulation such as holding up a gymnast and holding the arm of a tennis player
Advantages/disadvantages of manual guidance
Advantages:
-Builds confidence for the performer
-Safer for performer,eliminates danger
-corrects errors
-feeling of correct skill
Disadvantages:
-Too much reliance can cause a lack of kinaesthesis/performer is unable to do it without help
Describe/give examples of mechanical guidance
-A device that is used to help performance such as an armband in swimming or a harness on a trampoline
Advantages/disadvantages of mechanical guidance
Advantages:
-builds confidence
-eliminates danger
-can be used with disabled athletes
Disadvantages:
-learner can become overdependent on support, interfering with kinaesthesis
-may demotivate learners as they are doing the skill themselves
What stage of learner would mostly rely on manual, mechanical and visual guidance
Cognitive stage learner
What stage of learner would mostly rely on verbal guidance
Autonomous stage learner
What is the biggest weakness of using demonstrations in visual guidance
Inaccurate demonstrations can lead to poor performance and confusion for performer
What is kinaesthesis
An intrinsic feeling of the correct skill
