Single Line Working Flashcards
When would single line working be introduced and what does this allow trains to do?
When one track of a double track uni-directional layout is blocked, SLW allows trains to travel in both directions over the unblocked line.
Who arranges SLW?
The pilot and the signaller. The signaller informs the pilot of arrangements.
What is SLW a form of?
Degraded working
How would you identify the pilot?
Red armlet with word ‘pilot’
How would you be made aware of SLW?
On the move or in the WON
How does the pilot protect the obstructed line?
With detonators placed 400m beyond the cross over to allow trains to draw forward and set back to access it. He also secures any points for the movement.
How many trains can travel over SLW in the normal direction? Which signals must be obeyed for trains travelling in the normal direction?
Normal amount of trains for the signalling system. All signals obeyed as normal
How many trains can travel over SLW in the wrong direction? Which signals must be obeyed for trains travelling in the wrong direction?
Only one train over the SLW section at one time. Signals to be disregarded.
How are movements back to the proper line controlled for trains travelling in the wrong direction?
By hand signallers unless there is a main aspect controlling movements back to the proper line or if the pilot travels with every train
Is a hand signaller still required to control movements back to the proper line in poor visibility?
Yes
Can position lights or shunting signals be used to control movements back to the proper line?
Yes but a hand signaller would still be required as these signals are not main aspects.
If there is no main aspect or hand signaller to control movements back to the proper line, what must happen?
Pilot must travel with trains in the wrong direction
If a pilot travels with the driver, what must they instruct the driver to do at the end of SLW?
Stop and contact the signaller for permission to re-join the proper line when opposite the signal protecting the cross over (TCB) or opposite the home signal controlled by the signal box that controls the cross over (AB).
If a train is due to enter SLW in either the right or wrong direction but there is no train to follow them, what must happen?
The pilot must accompany the driver.
What serves as your authority to enter SLW?
Possession of the completed RT3193 form and personal authority of the pilot.
Who issues the RT3193?
The pilot
What is a feature of the RT3193?
Double sided- right/wrong direction
What information is included on the RT3193?
Cross overs SLW is taking place between, affected lines, TSRs/ESRs, intermediate signal boxes that are closed, to approach points at caution and check if they are set correctly, to pass points at 15mph if they are unworked not clipped or scotched or if you are the first train, to pass points at 50mph if not the first train to pass, AHBC instructions to pass on authority of green hand signal only, hand signaller locations, level crossing arrangements, speeds, to pass any specific location only if authorised by a hand signal, whether a hand signaller or main aspect controls the cross over.
What must you do with your ticket when you reach the end of SLW?
Write ‘cancelled’ on it and return to pilot or fax at depot.
In what circumstances would you not receive an RT3193?
REAR or when working to and from a point of obstruction
