Professional Driving Flashcards
When reporting for duty, what must you do?
Be fit for duty and be well rested
Check daily sheets, pigeon hole, notice cases, sign for WONs/PONs and collect diagram
What must you do before leaving?
Complete reports and delays- 30 mins overtime to do so
If you are unfit for work, what must you do?
Inform control- do not attend work
If you have any personal issues, what must you do?
Seek support before an incident occurs
What equipment must you carry on duty?

Driver’s keys
Docket
Driving licence
WONS and PONs
Safety shoes
Sunglasses
Watch
ID
What are the forms that you must carry on duty?
A, B and C forms
RT3185- signalling irregularities
NR3190- Emergency special working
RT3177- modified working
What is required in a SCU?
Driver must check every cab and conduct static brake test from rear and leading cab (if coupled, must check intermediate cabs)
What is required in SCUD?
Same as SCU but guard to do door test
What must you check with the guard before departing?
Stopping pattern
When approaching your train, what are you checking for?
Not to be moved boards, non-multi stickers, safety systems isolated lights visible from exterior, formation of train, tail lights on rear, vehicle appears to be safe to travel.
How do you perform a SCUD/SCU?
Hinge to hinge, starting in rear cab and then static brake test.
When you are PQA, what do you have?
Orange cab pass for one year
As a PQA driver, who can travel in the cab with you?
No one but DTM to assess, pilot, fitter or person acting in course of duties and PTS trained
After 1 year, can a PQA driver have a route learner?
Yes but they can’t drive until assessed on route conducting.
What is a red cab pass?
Not PTS trained
What is a black cab pass?
Other TOCs- must be in date and ask for ID
What must there be to be in the cab?
A reason
What must you have to drive over a specific route?
Route knowledge of entire route or be accompanied by route conductor
If route conductor not traction competent, what are their responsibilities and yours?
Route conductor to speak to signaller and instruct driver
Driver to show route conductor how to stop train in emergency and location of emergency equipment.
If the route conductor is competent in route and traction, what must they do?
They must drive and become responsible for the train.
What is the dispatch procedure?
Self dispatch everywhere but Leeds
Guard presses TRTS 2 mins before departure
Once signal received, guard gets on train and gives 2 buzzers
Driver checks signal/off indicator and gives 2 buzzers then departs
What is the dispatch procedure if ECS?
Driver presses TRTS- if no TRTS, contact signaller when ready
If dispatched by a dispatcher, what is the dispatch procedure?
Dispatcher presses TRTS, 1st tip when clear, 2nd top when ready to go, guard then gives 2 buzzers to driver
What is the risk of relying on an off indicator?
No aspect shown- edge forward as next aspect unknown.
What are your actions if there is no guard or if you are no longer ready to depart?
Ask the signaller to put the signal back to danger.
Can you start in passenger service from a goods line or siding?
No
Can you leave a depot or sidings without the permission of the signaller?
No
What must you remember to do if you go out of service and become ECS?
Contact signaller for new headcode and re-register GSMR and OTDR
When should a RBT be carried out?
First time you use that cab, if unit has been stabled, after coupling/uncoupling, after fault rectification, during snow/freezing conditions and after isolating brakes
What is the purpose of a SBT?
Determines brake release- TW4 satisfied
What is the purpose of a RBT?
Determines brake performance and carried out at a suitable speed to test this (usually 40-50mph)
What are the requirements of a RBT?
Must drop 10mph and be done before first stop when running on proceed aspects (try for same location each time)
What is the initial brake step for RBT on tread?
Step 1
What is the initial brake step for RBT on disc?
Step 2
What is the initial brake step for RBT in snow on either disc or tread?
Step 3 to generate heat
What is the risk with new brake blocks?
May not be 100% brake performance until bedded in- may need to adapt braking points and technique based on results of RBT
