Name types of train accidents?
Derailment
Collision involving train or rail vehicles
Collision with obstruction, road vehicle or person
Fire that may put other trains at danger
Fire where pax may be evacuated onto running lines
Accidental division causing another line to be obstructed
What are your immediate actions in an accident?
Brake to emergency and make emergency call
Confirm OLE switch off if required
Apply hazard lights or red lights forwards
Check if other lines obstructed- if unsure, treat as obstructed
When signal protection confirmed, place TCOC on all affected lines including your own if whole train de-railed
If signal protection cannot be provided or signaller can’t be contacted- emergency protection
If train fails in TBW/ESW, only protect own line 1 1/4 miles to rear and apply TCOC
Where should you avoid stopping in a fire?
Tunnel, viaduct, wooden platform, level crossing
If passcom pulled, when should you override it?
If the stopping location would be unsuitable- eg: tunnel or viaduct
If your train is stopped in a tunnel from a passcom and there is a fire, what are your actions?
EBS to override passcom, TIS to override open doors activated by egress and reverse out of tunnel.
If there is a risk of fire spreading, what are your actions?
Separate burning vehicles from rest of train
What indication would you get of an engine fire externally?
Hazard light on affected vehicle
If a passcom is pulled, when must you never override it?
When leaving a platform as someone could be being dragged.
If the automatic fire bottle is not activated, what are your actions?
Manually overrride the fire bottle from the affected vehicle to preserve other engines.
If the fire still isn’t extinguished from manually overriding in the cab, what are your actions?
Manually pull sole bar extinguisher and take AFF outside with you to use on exterior
What should you keep AFFF away from?
OLE
What is the fire triangle?
Heat, oxygen & fuel
What is a blue fire extinguisher?
Dry powder
What is a red fire extinguisher?
Water
What is a beige fire extinguisher?
AFFF foam spray
What is a black fire extinguisher?
Co2 Carbon Dioxide
What does the Fire Isolation Switch do?
Turns off bells and hazard light on affected vehicle
What is the risk of using the Fire Isolation Switch and how do you overcome this?
No indications if fire restarts in that vehicle- guard must patrol vehicle
If you use the Fire Isolation switch on one vehicle, will you still receive fire indications in other vehicles?
Yes
How would you remove an engine stop light after a fire?
ESIS button at sole bar level
What may be required in the event of a fire in relation to pax?
A controlled evacuation
What are your actions if pax have already used the egress?
Emergency call to ensure trains are stopped, ensure pax in position of safety and not at risk from OLE
If the train is able to proceed after a fire, what are your actions?
Fire isolation switch and ESIS to remove stop light as one engine defective- other engines will still start
What is a divided train?
Where a train is believed to be coupled correctly but the rear portion is left behind.
If a train splits during a pull test, is this a division?
No
What are your immediate actions if your train divides?
Immediately bring train to a stand and contact signaller.
Ensure no one has fallen from train
Gangway end doors closed and secured
Pax in safe position on train.
After your immediate actions during a train division, how would you secure the train?
Ensure both portions are secure and all vehicles accounted for
Check couplers for damage
Check lineside equipment for damage
If units can be recoupled, seek authority from signaller to WDM
If units cannot be recoupled, rear portion to be left with red at rear and white at front (confirming exact location to signaller)
If you have to leave a portion in the section, how should your lights be set?
Red at rear and white on front.
Inform signaller of exact location of remaining portion
