Conformity
A
- a change in a persons behaviour/opinions in response to a real/imagined pressure from a person or group
- real/imagined pressures depend on whether or not there are consequences for not conforming

- weakest level
- public agreement, private disagreement; instead ‘go along’
- done to gain approval, or avoid disapproval
- result of NSI

- middle level
- temporary/short term change in beliefs in groups presence
- e.g. acting more professional at work

A
- strongest level
- adopting beliefs, views and attitudes of group
- e.g. raised in religious household makes you religious
- result of ISI

A
- conforming because individual wants to be correct; usually over topics we lack knowledge in
- usually when individually is uncertain/unsure
- leads to internalisation
- e.g. Fein et al. : change voting choice for presidential candidate after seeing others vote for another

- conforming to gain approval
- e.g. person smokes as they’re surrounded by smokers

- Garandeau et al. : bullies could manipulate other children to victimise child, as he provided group with a common goal.

A
- Lucas et al. : conformity higher when maths problem was harder, and participant rated personal ability lower. Shows individuals more likely to conform if they lack information to make own informed decisions.
