Q

Retroactive Interference

A
  • NEW memories block recollection of old memories
  • McGeoch et al. : P’s in 6 groups to recall lists of words (synonyms, antonyms, words unrelated to original list, 3 digit numbers, consonant syllables, NO new list - control)
  • those who learnt synonym list recallled 3.1 less correct items on average (compared to control)
  • supports idea that extent of forgetting is larger with two similar items

Q
  • Eval: lacks eco-validity
A
  • artificial stimuli used in tasks (lists of words with no meaning to participants)
  • LOW MUNDANE REALISM
  • likely to learn lists of meaningful words in real life; which we also draw links upon
  • therefore lacks ecological validity

Q

+ Eval: Lab Experiments

A
  • extraneous and confounding variables (such as excess noise that may interfere with recall) removed; meaning that a causal relationship can be drawn
