Behavioural Characteristics of OCD
Compulsions, Avoidance Behaviour
Compulsions
- repetitive and intrusive thoughts focused around the stimulus
- acting upon thoughts reduces anxiety
Avoidance Behaviour
- avoidance of specific stimulus
- negatively reinforced (classical conditioning)
- as an individual who avoids specific stimulus will avoid anxiety associated with having to carry out compulsive behaviours and suffer from obsessive thoughts
Emotional Characteristics of OCD
Guilt and Disgust, Depression, Anxiety
Depression
due to constant compulsion to carry out compulsive/repetitive behaviours, which often interfere with day-to-day functioning and relationships
Anxiety
COMBINATION
- acknowledgement that thoughts are irrational
- despair at the fact they will always lead to compulsive behaviours
