R8. ToRR: Duck’s Phase Model Flashcards
1
Q
Duck’s Phase Model
A
- process of relationship breakdown
- 4 stages
2
Q
Stage 1
A
- intra-psychic stage
- cognitive; compare profitability of relationship compared to potential others
- private, unlikely to be shared
3
Q
Stage 2
A
- dyadic stage
- thoughts of breakup are now openly discussed between partners
- voice concerns over inequity, jealousy, etc.
- may trigger salvaging relationship or begin public breakdown
4
Q
Stage 3
A
- social-phase
- breakup made public; couple decide between either giving support, or blaming each other
- results in mutual friends having to pick sides
- friends may also attempt to save relationship
5
Q
Stage 4
A
- grave-dressing phase
- confirms the end of the relationship, signals both members to ‘move on’
- ‘keeping good face’, maintaining positive social image
- fabricate false stories to make reason for breakup more ‘socially acceptable’
- both partners carry on with lives, taking lessons from relationship
6
Q
- Eval: FIFTH STAGE?
A
- resurrection phase: individuals learn from experience in previous relationships
- relationship ‘stages’ should be dynamic, as opposed to a ‘sequence’ of stages
- social dynamics during dyadic or social phase (such as spreading rumours) may hinder chances of reuniting
- over-simplified, little eco-validity as it doesn’t represent natural progression of irl relationships
7
Q
- Eval: Fatal Attraction Hypothesis
A
- initially desirable characteristics become less significant as the relationship progresses
- explains REASON for breakdown instead of process
- lacks eco-validity as it is simply a general description of universal breakdown process instead of a concrete explanation
8
Q
- Eval: Methodological Issues with Basis Research
A
- self-report measures: retrospective = relies upon accurate memory and personal perception
- researchers are unwilling to intervene in early stages, means that early stages are mostly speculative and their workings inferred from later stages
