M3. LTM Types Flashcards
1
Q
2 Types
A
episodic, semantic, procedural
2
Q
Episodic
A
- memories with personal meanings; details to how/when they occurred; associated people/places
3
Q
Semantic
A
understanding of words, themes and concepts (the world and associated knowledge)
4
Q
Procedural
A
memories of ‘learned skills’
5
Q
+ Eval: Peterson et al.
A
- found that semantic memories recalled from left pre-frontal cortex
- episodic memories recalled from right pre-frontal cortex
- shows different types of LTM, AND their different neurological bases, as they’re recalled from different parts of the brain
6
Q
+ Eval: HM and Clive Wearing
A
- both had impaired episodic memory, but procedural and semantic remained unaffected
- Clive Wearing: could understand the concept of music and play piano (procedural and semantic); but was unable to remember wife visiting him 5 minutes previously (episodic)
- STRONG support for idea that LTM has different stores, as well as localisation of function
