Shoulder Injuries Flashcards
What massage techniques can be used on the upper trapezius?
Petrissage
NMT
Muscle compressions
What massage techniques can be used on Teres Major?
Longitudinal massage
Frictions
Trigger pointing
What massage techniques can be used on Rhomboids?
Longitudinal massage
Protract scapular
Deep tissue massage
Trigger pointing
What massage techniques can be used for Levator Scapulae?
Kneading
NMT
What is a rotator cuff strain?
Tear in the tendon caused by overuse or acute injury
Weakest point is 1cm from the attachment to the greater tuberosity of the humerus
What are the causes of rotator cuff strain?
Trauma (direct fall onto shoulder, lifting heavy objects)
Overuse (increased age or use = decreased blood flow and elasticity, >35yrs increased weakness)
What are the symptoms of rotator cuff strain?
Intense pain when injury occurs if acute
Pain on palpation
Pain on resisted movement
What is the treatment for rotator cuff strain?
Mobility exercises
Rehab
What massage techniques can be used for rotator cuff strain?
Soft tissue work on all periscapular muscles
Identify and treat areas of tension
Friction techniques on tendon
What are the causes of adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)?
Hormonal release
Genetics
Autoimmune response to injury, fracture, surgery
What are the symptoms of adhesive capsulitis?
Pain and stiffness
Range of movement
Pain at night
What is the treatment for adhesive capsulitis?
Traction techniques Rotations Harmonics Scapular articulation AP shear
What are the massage techniques for adhesive capsulitis?
NMT into rotator cuff muscles
What soft tissue techniques can be used around the biceps, triceps and deltoids?
Picking up and rolling
Myofascial release
STR
What soft tissue techniques can be used around the lats?
Longitudinal massage
STR
What soft tissue techniques can be used around the pectorals?
STR/passive stretch
What soft tissue techniques can be used around the subscapularis?
Trigger pointing
STR
What are the statistics for dislocated shoulders?
Most common traumatic sporting injury
Male 9 : 1 Female
Greater incidence of anterior than posterior dislocation
What are the causes of anterior shoulder dislocation?
Externally rotated and abducted arm fell upon
Fall onto an outstretched arm
What are the causes of a posterior shoulder dislocation?
Pulled vigorously outwards and backwards, e.g., Judo
What are the symptoms of a shoulder dislocation?
Excruciating pain
Lack of mobility
Feeling of shoulder ‘popping out’
Looks or feels deformed
What is the treatment for shoulder dislocation?
Manipulation back into place
Immobilisation for 2 weeks
Mobilisation and strength training
What is subacromial bursitis?
Inflammation of the bursa underneath the acromion and on top of the supraspinatus tendon
What are the causes of subacromial bursitis?
Fall or blow to the shoulder
Supraspinatus tendonopathy
Overuse of arm above shoulder level
What are the symptoms of subacromial bursitis?
Pain in the anterior, upper part of the shoulder
Tenderness on palpation
Positive impingement testing (painful arc)
What is the treatment for subacromial bursitis?
Treat underlying reason for pain
Mobility exercises
