Most common fracture around the wrist
Men 10 : 1 Women
What are the causes of scaphoid fracture?
Falling onto hand with outstretched arm
What are the symptoms of scaphoid fracture?
Pain and swelling in wrist
Impairment of power, e.g., when gripping
Tenderness when pressing in wrist
What are the complications of scaphoid fractures?
Bone breaks into 2 and 1 half has blood flow compromised - results in necrosis and may end in bone graft
What is the treatment for scaphoid fracture?
Immobilisation initially
Rehab including mobility exercises
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Impingement on the median nerve through the carpal tunnel
Tunnel is 20mm wide and 25mm long
9 flexor tendons and the median nerve pass through
What are the causes of carpal tunnel?
Inflammation of flexor tendons
Pregnancy
Fracture
Hand intensive activities, e.g., cycling
What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel?
Tenderness over palmar aspect distal to wrist
Tingling in thumb and next 2 1/2 fingers
Hypotrophy of thumb muscles
Pain worse at night
How can carpal tunnel be tested for?
Phalens test
Tinels test
