Energy Systems Flashcards
What is anaerobic respiration?
Muscles not supplied with enough oxygen:
Glucose + Oxygen = Lactic Acid + Energy
What energy do we need for sport?
Varies a great deal
Depends on the intensity of the activity
Can use anaerobic respiration for short bursts of activity, but system can only keep going for a short time as it has no oxygen and lactic acid builds up
What is lactic acid?
A mild poison which soon makes muscles feel fatigued when it builds up
What is oxygen debt?
Muscles need oxygen to get rid of lactic acid after anaerobic exercise
The extra oxygen is called the oxygen debt, the amount of oxygen needed to get the body back to resting rate
What is aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen = CO2 + Water + Energy
Lasts > 3 minutes
What affects aerobic respiration?
Several factors
The rate at which the lungs absorb oxygen (rate of gaseous exchange)
The rate at which the heart can deliver oxygen (higher cardiac output and stroke volume = more oxygenated blood pumping around the body per beat)
