Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) Flashcards
What is a muscle energy technique?
A form of therapy in which the patient’s muscles are actively used on request, from a precisely controlled position, in a specific direction, and against a counterforce
When is an MET used?
To mobilise restricted joints
To lengthen tense muscles and fascia
To improve circulation, respiration, and neuromuscular relationships
To prepare tissues for HVLA
What is the muscle energy technique?
Move the limb/body part just to the point of bind where a stretch can just be felt
Engage the agonist with an isometric contraction of the muscle for at least 6 seconds
Patient should use 20-30% of their effort
Ask patient to take deep breath in
On exhalation, increase the stretch to the next level
Repeat for 3-4 times and maintain final stretch for 20 seconds
