Sexual Offending Behaviour: Treatment Flashcards
CBT?
- What is the first step?
- identify offence cycle
CBT: 1. Identify Offence Cycle A) precipitating factors?(3) B)? (3) C)? D)
A) Emotions - ex angry, depressed, lonely
Thoughts: rationalizations, justifications, fantasies
Situations : near preferred victim, use of pornography, fight with partner, bored, intoxicated
B) victim identification/ victim grooming/ luring
C) Nature of the actual offence - how they maintain control (threats, promises, gifts…), sex acts
D) Post- offence behaviour
Explain step 2 of CBT !
- use CBT methods to address problem areas associated with sexual offending ( eg social skill deficits, poor emotion management, distorted attitudes) and to help manage high risk situations.
Medical Interventions? (2)
- Castration
- Chemical Castration: Depo–provera and SSRIs (birth control )…to reduce sexual drive…SE: gain weight, mouth dryness…
Behavioural Treatments?(3)
What’s common between all three?
- Aversion training: smell, smelling salts (gross) every time they have bad fantasies to make the activity unpleasant to the offender.
- Masturbatory Satiation Therapy: masturbate after ejaculation - unpleasant
- Covert sensitization : graphic details of things that are not tied to the fantasy to make it unpleasant.
- -> they all are used to make sexual activity unpleasant for the offender

What is the best type of treatment?
- skill based treatments.
Is jail always the best solution ?
