What are the SIRS criteria of sepsis?
A
temp >38oC or <36oC
Heart rate >90/min
resp rate 20/min
WBC count >12,000/mm3 or <4,000/mm3
2 or more of these must be present to define sepsis.

What is septic shock?
A
The presence of at least 2 of the SIRS criteria (sepsis) and acute failure of at least one organ.

What bacteria need to be covered by antibiotic treatment during a colon-derived sepsis (e.g. due to colon perforation)?
A
enterococci
anaerobes
coliforms (e.g. Klebisiella)

A
high flow O2 IV fluid recuscitation blood cultures (+cultures from septic site) IV antibiotics measure lactate and FBC monitor urine output
