- Cobble stone appearance
- patchwork/segmented pattern
- ‘skip lesions’ - interspersed normal and diseased areas
Histological appearance?
- disruption of crypt architecture
- granulomas formation
- increased cells of chronic inflammation
Crohn’s disease affects…
all the areas of the bowel wall (mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria) - it is a transmural process
Complications of Crohn’s?
fistulas
anal disease (sinuses, fissures, abscesses)
obstruction
pre-malignant
Ulcerative Colitis?
Chornic inflammation confined to the colon and rectum.
Inflammation of mucosa and submucosa of the colon
aetiology is unknonwn
Ulcerative colitis always involves…
the rectum.
The disease progresses up the colon in a conitinuous manner (key difference from Crohn’s)
UC symptoms?
diarrhoea, mucous and blood on PR
Which layers are affected in UC?
mucosa and submucosa
superficial ulcers may be present
Complications of UC?
intractable disease toxic megacolon (can rupture) colorectal carcinoma
