What is Primary Biliary Cholangitis?
Autoimmune disease affecting the biliary epithelim, predominantly in women.
T-cell mediated.
CPx of Primary biliary cholangitis?
middle aged women fatigue itch without rash xanthelasma xanthomas
Treatment for Primary biliary cholangitis?
ursea deoxycholic acid
How is Auto-immune hepatitis Type 1 diagnosed?
AST and ALT elevated
IgG elevated
autoimmune antibodies
liver biopsy: piecemeal necrosis and lobular involvement; plama cells; Interface hepatitis
Treatment of autoimmune hepatitis type 1?
Corticosteroids (+ Azathioprine)
What is Primary Sclerosing Choangitis?
Autoimmune disease of large bile ducts; common in males..
Scarring alters the diameter of the bile ducts, restricting bile flow.
What is haemochromatosis?
Genetic Iron overload syndrome.
-patient appears ‘bronzed’
Treatment: Venesection (bleed the iron out)
What is Wilsons Disease?
Loss of function of caeruloplasmin, a copper-binding protein.
Results in copper deposits in liver and basal ganglia.
Treat with: copper-chelating drugs.
What is Alpha 1 anti-trypsin deficiency?
Mutation in A1AT genes, causing excess tryptic activity, leadingto lung emphysema and protein deposits in the liver.
What is Budd-Chiari disease?
Thrombosis of the hepatic veins
Presents with jaundice, tender hepatomegaly and ascites
What is Methotrexate?
- Drug used in Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
- Causes cirrhosis (liver toxin)
