Mucosal Immunity Flashcards
What immune cells predominate in the effector mechanisms of the gut mucosal immune system?
Activated and memory T cells, T helper cells
What are Peyer’s patches?
Lymphoid tissue aggregates found in the ileum.
-covered by M cells
What is the function of M cells?
To sample antigen from gut lumen and deliver it to antigen-presenting cells.
What antibody predominates in the intestinal humoral response?
IgA - dimeric
followed by IgM and Ig G
What are intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs)?
Special CD8+ T cells in the gut.
-IELs kill damaged or infected gut epithelial cells
What causes food allergies?
This is Type I hypersensitivity - allergen-specific IgE bind to mast cell surface, causing degranulation
What is the disease mechanism of coeliac disease?
- Autoimmune disorder, in which gluten (gliadin) is the antigen targeted
1. Gliadin-specific T cells are activated
2. T cells activate production of Ig by plasma cells and inflammatory cytokines by T cells
3. Enterocytes are damaged
4. Loss of villi architecture results
