What is contained by the spermatic cord?
3 arteries (testicular, artery to vas deferens, cremasteric artery)
3 nerves (ilio-inguinal, geniral branch, gentio femoral sympathetic)
3 other things (pampiniform venous plexus, vas deferens, lymhatics)
Location of the deep inguinal ring?
2 cm superior to the midpoint of the inguinal ligament
Direct inguinal hernia?
Passes through the deep inguinal ring only
Indirect inguinal hernia?
Passes through both the deep and superficial rings of the inguinal canal and can descend to the scrotum.
What are the complications of hernia repair operations?
recurrence (<10%) urinary retention bleeding/haematoma chronic pain numbness testicular atrophy / ischaemic orchitis wound infection
What do femoral hernias protrude through?
the femoral cancal
Why are femoral hernias higher priority than inguinal hernias?
Femoral hernias have high risk of incarceration (cutting off blood supply)
Inscisional hernia?
Hernia at the site of a previous andominal inscision
What is a Paediatric inguinal hernia?
Indirect hernia in make infants, more common in pre-term babies
