Liver Biochemistry Flashcards
Where are plasma proteins produced?
the liver:
- abumin
- alpha, beta and gamma globulins
What are the functions of plasma proteins?
- maintain oncotic or colloid osmotic pressure
- trasnport hydrophobic substances (steroid hormones, free fatty acids, bilirubin cholesterol)
- pH buffers
- enzymes
- immunity
What is the main determinant of plasma oncotic pressure?
Albumin
Functions of Albumin?
-Transport (fatty acids, bilirubin, hydrophobic hormones, hydrophobic drugs)
How is iron transported in the blood?
-as Fe3+ (ferric iron) bound to transferrin
How is iron stored in cells?
Bound to ferritin.
What is the Cu transporter protein?
Ceruloplasmin
Liporotein lipid transporters?
Chylomirons, VLDL, IDL, LDL, HDL
Chylomicrons?
carry exogenous (dietery) fat to the liver
VLDL?
transport endogenous (dietary) fat to peripheral tissues
IDL?
LDL precursor
LDL
transports cholesterol to peripheral tissues
HDL?
transports cholesterol from the bloodstream to the liver
What is cholesterol a precursor of?
bile acids
steroid hormones
viamin D
Essential for cholesterol synthesis?
Acetyl-CoA
NADPH
ATP
HMG-CoA reductase in the liver
