Biliary tract and pancreas pathology Flashcards
What is cholelithiasis?
Gall stones
What is the cause of gallstone formation?
- imbalance of the ratio of cholesterol to bile salts in the bile
- excess bilirubin (pigment stones)
Accumulation of gallstones in the gall bladder cause…
acute cholecystitits by irritating its wall
Gallstones can cause acute pancreatitis by…
obstructing the ampulla of vater, causing backflow into the pancreas
Enzyme blood marker of acute pancreatitis?
elevated serum amylase
How does damage to pancreatic cells cause inflammation?
Release of pancreatic enzymes (lipases and proteases) causes fat necrosis, tissue destruction and haemorrhage.
What are the complications of acute pancreatitis?
death shock pseudocyst formation abscess formation hypocalcaemia hyerpglycaemia
Causes of chronic pancreatitis?
alcoholism gall stones (obstruction of sphincter of Oddi / ampulla of vater)
What is the main type of pancreatic cancer?
adenocarcinoma
Where do pancreatic adenocarcinomas spread?
- directly to dueodenum, stomach, spleen
- local lymph nodes
- through blood to the liver
What are the components of bile?
-miscelles of cholesterol, phospholipids, bile salts and bilirubin
What is the function of the gall bladder?
Storage and concentration of bile
