What is self efficacy?
Self efficacy is an athletes ability belief in their ability to successfully complete a set task.
What is Banduras self-efficacy theory?
-Banduras theory details how how self-efficacy can develop self-confidence and sporting.
-The self-efficacy theory tells us that performance accomplishments vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion and emotional arousal will create efficacy expectations, which will increase athletic performance.
What does performance accomplishments mean
Coaches should praise / reinforce the effort that has been taken to reach accomplishments
Vicarious experiences meaning
Occurs when an athlete sees someone similar to them successfully completing a task. This can enhance self belief in being able to do the same
Verbal persuasion meaning
Occurs when someone important to the player reassures the athlete
What does self esteem mean
Self esteem refers to how much you like or value yourself.
What is high self esteem
Heigh self esteem has been associated with higher levels of leadership, independence and resilience. Which are all important qualities for athletes who want to progress to senior or elite levels.
Higher self esteem makes you more likely to approach challenges.
What is low self esteem
It is linked with higher levels of anxiety, depression and different fears. It has also been linked to decreased total mood state and more maladaptive health behaviours. Low self esteem can make it difficult to transition to adult sport without racing significant difficulties.
What is efficacy?
The ability to produce a desired of intended result
What is the influence of expectations on sport and exercise performance?
-The expectations an athlete has of themselves and the expectations others have of them can affect their behaviour. high expectations can enhance levels of confidence as it csn percieved as competence
