Competitive Pressure In Sports Flashcards
What does arousal mean
Arousal is a state of alertness that prepares the body for actionand anticipation. It involves both psychological activity (increased attention) and physiological activity (increased heart rate ,) . Arousal can be seen as a continuum, with two extremes at each side
What’s the drive theory
Arousal performance is linear. Arousal increases so does performance. The more learned a skill is the more likely arousal will lead to a better performance
What is the inverted u hypothesis
It was born out of limitations of drive theory. It stayed that performance levels will be at their highest at optimal arousal levels but when too low or too high performance will be lower
What is the individual zones of optimal functioning theory
Expands on previous theories by arguing that everyone has different optimal levels of arousal and can remain in that zone of arousal for a period of time
Effects of changes in arousal on sports performance
During heightened states of arousal the attentional field, which focuses attention and concentration becomes barrows. The more aroused you become the lower number of relevant cues you can concentrate on
What is flow states
When you feel your muscles pumping ,you sense your breathing time flies but you don’t realise that you are taking part in the activity
What is choking
Extreme form of nervousness(when golfer misses easy hole due to nerves)
