Leadership Flashcards
What are prescribed leaders?
Prescribed leaders are appointed by some form of higher authority.
What are emergent leaders?
Emergent leaders achieve leadership status by gaining the respect and support of the group. These leaders achieve their status through showing specific leadership skills or being skilful at their sport.
What are autocratic leaders?
Autocratic leaders have firm views about how and when things should be done. They are inflexible with their approach to the group
What are democratic leaders?
Democratic leaders make decisions only after consulting group members. They encourage group involvement, adopt an informal and relaxed approach to leadership, and listen to ideas relating to the prioritisation and completion of goals.
What is Chelladurai’s multidimensional model of sport leadership?
It suggests the team’s performance and satisfaction with the leader will be highest if the leader’s required behaviours, preferred behaviours and actual behaviours all agree.
What are required behaviours?
They generally determined by the situation the leader is in and the expectation that the leader conforms to expected norms.
What is preferred behaviour?
Determined by the people within the group or team. Their preferences are related to factors including personality, experience and skill of the athletes; and non-sport-related aspects like age and gender.
What is actual behaviour?
It is directly determined by the characteristics of the leader, and indirectly by situational factors and the preferences of the group.
What are antecedents?
The things that lead to the leader behaviours. They are: The situation, the leader and team members.
What are consequences?
Things that occur as a result of the leader behaviours. They are: The athlete’s performances and satisfaction.
How do effective leaders help athletes?
They can enhance attentional focus of athletes. They can also improve athletes commitment and determination.
