What are perfectionists
Perfectionists set extremely high standards for themselves. Can be highly critical of other if not up to high standards
What are functional perfectionism
This is a positive form of perfectionism. It is usually possessed by highly motivated athletes. It allows athletes to gain pleasure from pursuing challenging goals. Strive to achieve perfection without destroying self esteem
What is dysfunctional
Negative form of perfectionism. Athletes try to achieve the unachievable. It can lead to the unachievable
How does perfectionism effect performance?
-Can lead to decreases in performance as perfectionists tend to be preoccupied with not making mistakes
-Can reduce their chances of enhancing performance as perfectionists tend to put off doing things they find difficult
-Perfectionist tendencies can motivate people to work hard and demonstrate commitment levels that ultimately end up improving performance
-Some perfectionists are risk averse. As a result of this, their levels of creativity and innovation are often reduced. This limits their potential to succeed as they might not try new things, due to a fear of failure.
