What is cohesion
Cohesion is the tendency for a group to stick together and remain united in the pursuit of its goals and objectives.
What is task cohesion?
How well team members work
together to achieve common goals and objectives.
What is social cohesion?
This is how much team members
tend to like each other’s company and how much they like each other.
Explain how environmental factors influence cohesion
Groups that are closer to each other (in terms of location), and which are smaller, are more cohesive because members have greater opportunities to interact and form relationships.
Explain how personal factors affect cohesion
The individual characteristics of group members are important in group cohesion. If players are motivated to achieve the group’s aims and objectives, are from similar backgrounds, have similar attitudes and opinions, and have similar levels of commitment, there will be more satisfaction among group members and the group is more likely to be cohesive.
Explain how leadership factors affect cohesion
Leadership styles, behaviours, communication styles and the compatibility of the coach’s and athletes’ personalities are key factors that affect cohesion.
Explain how team factors affect cohesion
If the team stays together for a long time, experiences successes and failures together and can be involved in the decision-making process, the group is more likely to be productive and cohesive.
Why is social cohesion good?
-It can enhance the team climate as more socially cohesive teams tend to provide greater levels of social support and are more comfortable with structured and clear communication.
-Collectively, these contribute to increased team performance and can increase athletes’ well-being
Why is task cohesion good?
It can help create an effective team climate, as high levels of task cohesion are usually associated with higher levels of team role acceptance and task interdependence, which can increase team performance.
What is the relationship between cohesion and performance?
The greater the level of cohesion the higher the level of performance.
Higher levels of performance also increase level of cohesion.
