seismic waves Flashcards
when are seismic waves created?
in an earthquake
what are the types of seismic waves?
body and surface waves
what are the two types of body waves?
p and s
what are body waves?
travel through the interior of the earth
which body wave moves the fastest?
p waves
what can o waves travel though?
solid liquid and gas
what can s waves travel through?
only through solid
what kind of waves are s waves?
tranverse
move up and down
what kind of waves are p waves?
compressional
back and forth
which body waves cause the most damage?
s waves
what are the two types of surface waves?
l and r
which surface wave is faster?
l wave
what movement does an l wave have>
horizontal
what kind of motion does an r wave have>
elliptical
what is meant by refkected and refracted?
rebounded]
change of angle
if an area is more dense how is it refracted?
if an area is more dense then the angle turns inwards
what doe the p waves show about the earths structure?
can be detected widely
except for a shadow w at 103 142 degrees after travelling through the outer core
conclusion that the inner core is solid as the angle then is refracted inwards
where is there a shadow of p waves?
103 and 142
what do s waves show about the earths structure?
only detected up to a quarter to 103 degrees then non are detected
showing that the outer core must be liquid
where can s waves only be detected up to?
quarter to 103 degrees
