διεξελθόντες δὲ χῶρον πολὺν ψαμμώδη καὶ ἐν πολλαῖς ἡμέραις, εἶδον δή ποτε δένδρα ἐν πεδίῳ πεφυκότα,
And having passed through a large sandy region for many days, they at last saw trees growing on a plain,
καὶ προσελθόντες ἥπτοντο τοῦ ἔποντος ἐπὶ τῶν δενδρῶν καρποῦ·
and having gone forward they began to pick the fruit which was on the trees.
ἁπτομένοις δὲ αὐτοῖς ἐπῆλθον ἄνδρες σμικροὶ, μετρίων ἐλάττονες ἀνδρῶν,
But as they were picking small men approached them shorter than men of average height,
λαβόντες δὲ ἦγον αὐτοῦς δι’ ἑλῶν μεγίστων, καὶ διεξελθόντες ταῦτα ἀφίκοντο εἰς πόλιν
and these took and led them through very great marshes, and having passed through these they arrived at a city
ἐν ᾗ πάντες ἦσαν ἴσοι τοῖς ἄγουσι τὸ μέγεθος, χρῶμα δὲ μέλανες.
in which all were equal in size to those leading them, and in colour black.
παρὰ δὲ τὴν πόλιν ἔρρει ποταμὸς μέγας,
beside the city a great river flowed,
ἔρρει δ’ ἀφ’ ἑσπέρας πρὸς ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα, ἐφαίνοντο δε ἐν αὐτῷ κροκόδειλοι.
and it flowed from the west to the rising sun, and crocodiles appeared in it.
ὁ μὲν δὴ τοῦ Ἀμμωνίου Ἐτεάρχου λόγος εἰς τοῦτο μοι δεδηλώσθω,
Let the story of Etearchos the Ammonian be set forth by me up to this point,
πλὴν ὅτι ἀπονοστῆσαί τε ἔφη τοὺς Νασαμῶνας, ὡς οἱ Κυρηναῖοι ἔλεγον,
except that he said both that the Nasamonians returned home, as the Cyrenaeans said,
καὶ τοῦς ἀνθρώπους, εἰς οὓς οὗτοι ἀφίκοντο, γοήτας εἶναι ἅπαντες.
and that the men to whom these men had come were all wizards
τὸν δὲ δὴ ποταμὸν τοῦτον Ἐτέαρχος συνεβάλλετο εἶναι τὸν Νεῖλον.
And Etearchos reckoned that this river was indeed the Nile
