μέχρι μὲν τεττάρων μηνῶν πλοῦ καὶ ὁδοῦ γιγνώσκεται ὁ Νεῖλος, πάρεξ τοῦ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ ῥεύματος.
The Nile is known as far as a voyage or journey of four months beyond the part which flows in Egypt.
ῥεῖ δ’ ἀφ’ ἑσπέρας τε καὶ ἡλίου δυσμῶν.
It flows from the west and the setting of the sun.
τὸ δ’ ἀπὸ τοῦδε οὐδεὶς ἔχει σαφῶς φράσαι· ἔρημος γάρ ἐστιν ἡ χώρα αὕτη ὑπὸ καύματος.
about the part after that no-one can speak clearly. for this land is desolate because of its heat.
ἀλλὰ τάδε μὲν ἤκουσα ἀνδρῶν Κυρηναίων φαμένων ἐλθεῖν τε ἐπὶ Ἄμμωνος χρηστήριον
But I have heard the following from some Cyrenaeans who said that they had gone to an oracle of Ammon
καὶ ἀφικέσθαι εἰς λόγους Ἐτεάρχῳ τῷ Ἀμμωνίων βασιλεῖ·
and came to have words with Etearchos king of the Ammonians
καί πως ἐκ λόγων ἄλλων ἀφίκοντο ἐς λέσχην περὶ τοῦ Νείλου, ὡς οὐδεὶς οἶδε τὰς πηγὰς αὐτοῦ.
and in some way from other conversations they came to a discussion concerning the Nile, about how no-one knows its source.
ὁ δὲ Ἐτέαρχος ἔφη ἐλθεῖν ποτε παρ’ ἑαυτὸν Νασαμῶνας ἄνδρας,
But Etearchus said that some Nasamonians once came to his court
οἳ, ἐρωτώμενοι εἴ τι ἔχουσι πλέον λέγειν περὶ τῶν ἐρήμων τῆς Λιβύης,
who on being questioned if they were able to say anymore about the desert places of Libya,
ἔφασαν παρ’ ἑαυτοῖς γενέσθαι ἀνδρῶν δυναστῶν παῖδας ὑβριστάς,
said that among them had been some violent sons of their chief men,
οἳ ἄλλα τε μηχανῷντο ἀνδρωθέντες περιττὰ
who after they became men, contrived other excesses,
καὶ δὴ καὶ ἀποκληρώσειαν πέντε ἑαυτῶν ὀψόμενους τὰ ἔρημα τῆς Λιβύης.
and in particular chose by lot five of them to [go and] see the deserted regions of Libya.
