τῆς γὰρ Λιβύης τὰ μὲν κατὰ τὴν βορείαν θάλασσαν,
For the parts of Libya along the northern sea,
ἀπ’ Αἰγύπτου ἀρξάμενοι μέχρι Σολόεντος ἄκρας, ἣ τελευτᾷ τῆς Λιβύης,
beginning from Egypt as far as the promontory of Soloeis, which is the end of Libya,
οἰκοῦσι Λίβυες καὶ Λιβύων ἔθνη πολλὰ πλὴν ὅσον Ἕλληνες καὶ Φοίνικες ἔχουσι·
the Libyans and many Libyan tribes inhabit except for as much as the Greeks and Phoenicians possess.
τὰ δὲ καθύπερθε τούτων θηριώδης ἐστὶν ἡ Λιβύη·
But as concerns the parts farther inland than this Libya is full of wild beasts
τὰ δὲ καθύπερθε τῆς θηριώδους ψάμμος τέ ἐστι καὶ ἄνυδρος δεινῶς καὶ ἔρημος πάντων.
and the parts further inland than this region full of wild beasts is sand and terribly waterless and empty of all things.
οἱ οὖν νεάνιαι, ὡς ἔφασαν οἱ Νασαμῶνες, ἀποπεμπόμενοι ὑπὸ τῶν ἡλίκων,
Therefore the young men, as the Nasamonians said, when they had been sent out by their peers,
ὑδατί τε καὶ σιτίοις εὖ ἐξηρτύμενοι ᾖσαν πρῶτον μὲν διὰ τῆς οἰκουμένης·
and equipped well with both water and food, went first through the inhabited region,
ταύτην δὲ διεξελθόντες εἰς τὴν θηριώδη ἀφίκοντο,
And having passed through this they arrived at the region filled with wild beasts
ἐκ δὲ ταύτης τὴν ἔρημον διέξῃσαν, τὴν ὁδὸν ποιούμενοι πρὸς ζέφυρον ἄνεμον.
and from this they passed through the desert region making their way towards the west wind
