Μυκερίνῳ τὰ μὲν τοῦ πατρὸς ἔργα ἀφήνδανε·
The deeds of his father did not please Mycerinus;
ὁ δὲ τὰ τε ἱερὰ ἀνέῳξε, καὶ τὸν λεὼν, τετρυμένον εἰς τὸ ἔσχατον κακοῦ, ἀνῆκε πρὸς ἔργα τε καὶ θυσίας·
he opened the temples and the people, afflicted to an extreme point of suffering he allowed back to their tasks and sacrifices.
δίκας δὲ αὐτοῖς πάντων βασιλέων δικαιοτάτας ἔκρινεν.
To them he gave
judgements which were the most just of all kings.
ὄντι δὲ ἠπίῳ τῷ Μυκερίνῳ κατὰ τοὺς πολίτας καὶ ταῦτα ἐπιτηδεύοντι
But although Mycerinus was being gentle with regard to the citizens and behaving in such a way
πρῶτον κακῶν ἦρξεν ἡ θυγατὴρ ἀποθανοῦσα, ἣ μόνον οἱ ἦν ἐν τοῖς οἰκίοις τέκνον.
his daughter, by dying, first began his woes, she who was his only child in the household.
μετὰ δὲ τὸ τῆς θυγατρὸς πάθος, δεύτερα τούτῳ τῷ βασιλεῖ τάδε ἐγένετο·
After the fate of his daughter then a second [misfortune] happened to this king as follows
ἦλθεν οἱ μαντεῖον ἐκ Βουτοῦς πόλεως, ὡς μέλλοι ἕξ ἔτη μόνον βιοὺς τῷ ἑβδόμῳ τελευτήσειν.
A prophecy from the city of Buto came to him that having lived for only 6 years, he was going to die in the seventh.
ὁ δὲ δεινὸν ποιησάμενος ἔπεμψεν εἰς τὸ μαντεῖον τῷ θεῷ ὀνείδισμα, ἀντιμεμφόμενος τάδε·
He, taking it badly, sent a reproach for the god to the oracle making the following criticisms in reply:
“ὁ μὲν πατὴρ ἐμοῦ καὶ πάτρως, ἀποκλείσαντες τὰ ἱερὰ, καὶ θεῶν οὐ μεμνημένοι
My father and uncle shutting the temples and not being mindful of the gods
ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους φθείροντες, ἐβίωσαν ἐπὶ πολὺν χρόνον·
but rather destroying men lived for a long time
ἐγὼ δ’ εὐσεβὴς ὢν μέλλω ταχέως οὕτω τελευτήσειν.”
I, although pious, am going to die quickly in this way.”
