ταῦτα δ’ ἐποίει τε καὶ ἐνετέλλετο ὁ Ψαμμήτιχος,
Psammetichus did these things and gave these instructions,
ἐθέλων ἀκοῦσαι ἥντινα φωνὴν ῥήξουσι πρώτην οἱ παῖδες, ἀπαλλαχθέντων τῶν ἀσήμων κνυζημάτων.
wishing to hear what speech the children would first break into, when meaningless baby-talk was set aside.
ἅπερ οὖν καὶ ἐγένετο· ὡς γὰρ διετὴς χρόνος ἐγεγόνει, τῷ ποιμένι ἀνοίγοντι τὴν θύραν καὶ εἰσιόντι
And so these things actually happened for after a period of two years had passed, when the shepherd opened the door and came in,
τὰ παιδία ἀμφότερα προσπίπτοντα “βεκός” ἐφώνουν, ὀρέγοντα τὰς χεῖρας.
both the children ran up to him and shouted “bekos, stretching out their hands.
τὰ μὲν δὴ πρῶτα ἀκούσας ἥσυχος ἦν ὁ ποιμήν·
At first when the shepherd heard it he kept quiet
ὡς δὲ πολλάκις φοιτῶντι αὐτῷ καὶ ἐπιμελομένῳ πολὺ ἦν τοῦτο τὸ ἔπος,
But since as he often visited and paid careful heed this word was [frequently repeated],
οὕτω δὴ σημήνας τῷ δεσπότῃ ἤγαγε τὰ παιδία εἰς ὄψιν τὴν ἐκείνου.
in this way indeed giving the information to his master he took the children into his sight.
ἀκούσας δὲ καὶ αὐτὸς ὁ Ψαμμήτιχος, ἐπυνθάνετο οἵτινες ἀνθρώπων “βέκος” τι καλοῦσι·
When Psammetichus heard for himself as well, he inquired what people call something “bekos”:
πυνθανόμενος δὲ ηὕρισκε Φρύγας καλοῦντας τὸν ἄρτον.
and by enquiring he found out that the Phrygians called bread [by this name].
οὕτω συνεχώρησαν Αἰγύπτιοι, τοιούτῳ σταθμησάμενοι πράγματι,
And so the Egyptians agreed, having weighed it up by such evidence
τοὺς Φρύγας πρεσβυτέρους εἶναι ἑαυτῶν.
that the Phrygians were older than themselves.
