τοῖς μὲν δὴ τῶν Αἰγυπτίων
To some of the Egyptians
ἱεροί εἰσιν οἱ κροκόδειλοι,
crocodiles are sacred
τοῖς δ’ οὒ,
and to others they are not
ἀλλ’ ἅτε πολεμίους περιέπουσι.
but they treat them as enemies.
οἱ δὲ περί τε Θήβας καὶ τὴν Μοίρεως λίμνην οἰκουντες
Those who live around Thebes and Lake Moeris
καὶ κάρτα ἡγοῦνται αὐτοὺς εἶναι ἱερούς.
actually consider them to be very holy.
ἕνα δὲ ἑκάτεροι τρέφουσι κροκόδειλον,
Each [community] raises one crocodile
δεδιδαγμένον εἶναι χειροήθη·
taught to be tame
ἀρτήματα δὲ εἰς τὰ ὦτα ἐνθέντες
inserting ornaments into their ears
καὶ ἀμφιδέας περὶ τοὺς προσθίους πόδας,
and bracelets around their front feet
καὶ σιτία ἀποτακτὰ διδόντες
and giving them specially prepared food
καὶ ἱερεῖα,
and animals for sacrifice
περιέπουσιν ὡς
they treat them as
κάλλιστα ζῶντας·
the noblest of living things
ἀποθανόντας δὲ
and when they die
ταριχεύοντες
embalming them
θάπτουσιν
they bury them
ἐν ἱεραῖς θήκαις.
in holy tombs.
οἱ δὲ περὶ Ἐλεφαντίνην πόλιν οἰκοῦντες
But those who live around the city
Elephantine
καὶ ἐσθίουσιν αὐτοὺς,
actually eat them
οὐχ ἡγούμενοι
since they do not consider
ἱεροὺς εἶναι.
them to be holy.
ἄγραι δἐ αὐτῶν πολλαὶ καθεστήκασι καὶ παντοῖαι·
Many and various methods of catching them have been established
ἣ δ’ ἐμοί γε δοκεῖ ἀξιωτάτη ἀφηγήσεως εἶναι
