καταπίνει,
swallows it down

οἱ δὲ ἕλκουσι.

ἐπειδὰν δὲ ἐξελκυσθῇ εἰς γῆν,
Then, when it has been dragged out onto land

πρῶτον ἁπάντων ὁ θηρευτὴς
first of all the hunter

πηλῷ κατέπλασεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς·
smears its eyes with mud;

τούτο δὲ ποιήσας

κάρτα εὐπετῶς τὰ λοιπὰ χειροῦται·
he masters the rest very easily;

if he did not do this
