What is a just war?
-fought for the right reasons in right way
-milchemet mitzvah
-milchemet reshut (not commanded but JUST)
A War is just if:
-fought in self-defence or general defence
-intention is to bring peace
-good chance of success
-reducing suffering long-term
-avoids killing of civilians
Divergent Jewish responses to Just War Theory:
-most agree w concept
-many example of God telling Jews to defend themselves in the Torah
-conscientious objectors would never fight
Situation Ethics
argues that a war can be right if it is the most loving thing to do
is war satisfies criteria then probably is most loving thing to do
