Purpose of Jewish prayer
-attempt by humans to communicate with God
-believe they are serving God with their heart, so obeying God’s commandment:
“serve him with all your heart”
opportunity to speak directly to God
Prayer in the home
mostly, prayers at home are said as private prayers
morning
they thank God for waking them before pouring water on their hands to purify themselves
DAY ENDS AND BEGINS W SHEMA
The mezuzah on each door of the house is a constant reminder of God’s presence and God’s blessing
Eating food requires prayers as Jewish people bless God
What are the three daily prayers?
-shacharit is morning prayer
-minchah is afternoon prayer and
-arvit is evening prayer.
Private prayers
-develop a relationship with God and that when they reach out to God, God listens and answers.
-no certain time
-use their own words
The importance of having different forms
of prayer
-sense of community
-order and purpose to people’s religious life
-helps people to pray who might find it difficult to know what to say
-gives people a feeling of stability and security by repeating familiar phrases in a familiar place.
Why is saying prayers in your own words whenever you want important?
-express their own thoughts and feelings
-contact God when they want
-ask for God’s help for themselves
-can use their own words
