SECTION 2 JUDAISM- TOPIC 2.2.1 JUSTICE Flashcards
Justice-
rewarding the good and punishing the bad and the
maintenance of right (making sure that what is right is what happens in society)
Non-religious attitudes to justice
-people are rewarded for their labour: without laws about business deals and work, modern-day society could not operate
-the weak are protected from the strong (imagine if there were no laws on stealing, murder and rape
-Without laws and justice, civilisation as we know it cannot function.
Why is justice important for Jews
The Tenakh says that God is a God of justice:
“all His ways are just”
The Tenakh says that people should be treated fairly and not cheated:
“Do not defraud your neighbour”
The Torah teaches that the rich should share with the poor:
“be open-handed”
Why justice is important for the victim?
so that they feel the hurt that they have suffered is recognised by society and paid for by the perpetrator.
Why do Jews believe justice is important for the
victim?
-Judaism teaches that justice should always be given and as the victim is totally innocent
-victims of crime should be compensated EXODUS “if there is serious injury…eye for eye, tooth for tooth”
-In the Tenakh, God commands his people to be just.
the unjust must be punished so that their victims are given justice
