The nature of public worship
Worship is either homage
or
reverence paid to a deity.
Purpose of Public Worship?
-sense of belonging to a whole community
-opportunity to feel the strength of the faith
-opportunity to make friends with others in the faith
-rabbis taught there’s more merit in praying with group
Features of Jewish public worship
synagogues should hold Shabbat evening prayers
After service ends rabbi takes cup of wine+ recites Kiddush- thank God
On Shabbat morning (Saturday), families go to synagogue for the morning prayer
The high point of the service is when the Sefer Torah is taken out of the Ark
In Liberal synagogues:
-prayers are said mainly in English, not Hebrew
-women attend all the services and sit with the men
-the rabbi may well be a woman
-there are some different prayers
The importance of synagogue worship

Torah says
“serve him with all your heart”
-provides the community with the opportunity to share in family celebrations such as brit milah
-gives order and purpose to people’s religious life
-It gives an opportunity to listen to the reading of the Torah and the rest of the Tenakh.
Why do Jews worship in different ways?
-Liberal/Reform Jews allow the use of musical instruments in worship
-Orthodox women place much more importance on private worship as they do not attend daily prayers in the synagogue.
-n Orthodox synagogues keep men and women separated because of the teachings of rabbis but LJ do not
