Shabbat
-Ceasing from work
God made world in 6 days rested on the 7th and hence jews should rest on 7th day and keep it holy !

-proclaim their belief that God created the world and then rested
-fulfil the mitzvot about Shabbat

Howt is Shabbat celebrated in the home?
-woman of the home lights the Shabbat candles
-The father of the household blesses the children and then recites Kiddush over the wine.

-After the blessing, the father cuts the bread, then dips a little in salt to recall the sacrifices at the Temple
-meal begins
How is Shabbat celebrated in the synagogue?
FRIDAY
-synagogues should hold Shabbat evening prayers
SATURDAY
-families go to synagogue for the morning prayer
-high point of the service is when the Sefer Torah
-On Shabbat afternoon, prayers take place.
Why Shabbat is important for Jewish people today?
-rest from work and concentrate on religion
-time to think about what matters most to them
-provides time for a person to think about God
-opportunity to socialise outside the demands and
pressures of work
Why is Shabbat important for the Jewish community?

-Shabbat is God’s gift to the Jewish people which binds them together

It reminds Jews of when they were slaves in Egypt:
