William penn
Founded the colony of Pennsylvania in 1682. He was a Quaker
Peter Stuyvesant
The unlinked governor of new Netherlands. No one liked him because he put a lot of taxes on the people and had harsh rule. He swore to defend his colony, (in a rivalry with England in 1664) but since no one helped him he just surrendered.
Quakers
Hated by most England. They were Protestant reformers. They believed ALL people were equal. They gave women rights and refused the wars.
Pennsylvania Dutch
German speaking Protestants who came to Pennsylvania.
Breadbasket colonies
The middle colonies that produced SO much grains.
Great wagon road
Settlers who traveled from Philadelphia to the back country on this old Iroquois trail.
Patroon
They gave out land to rich families to encourage farming in new Netherlands. The patroon promised to bring 50 farm families from Europe to live on the land.
Proprietary colony
New Jersey. The king gave land to one or more people.
Proprietor
The people who got the land and could give it to other people.
Royal colony
A colony under control of the English crown (new jersey)
Cash crop
Crops that are sold for money at markets
Backcountry
The area of land along the eastern slopes of the Appalachian mountains.
