Chapter 10 Section 2 Flashcards
Toussaint l’ouverture
Led the revolt in Haiti against the French. The enslaved Africans that worked for the French revolted. The French captured toussaint but Haiti still rebelled and won. They became independent in 1804.
Pinckney treaty
Washington set Thomas Pinckney to make a treaty with Spain to let the Americans ship their produce through the Mississippi and store them in the port of New Orleans. He was successful. He also settled an old dispute about the borders of Spanish Florida.
Louisiana purchase
Jefferson tried to buy New Orleans from the French. He sent Livingston and Monroe to buy it. At first Talleyrand did not want to sell it. But then he offered to sell them all of Louisiana territory. We accepted. We got it for an awesome price. (Reasons are in my recall, reference there)
Expedition
Is a long voyage or journey of exploration.
Lewis and Clark
Led the Lewis and Clark expedition. (Find pacific, friend Indians, look and take notes on the environment, Sacajawea)
Sacajawea
A Shoshone. Her and her French husband served as translators for Lewis and Clark. They also helped with medicine because they knew the lands very well.
Continental divide
A mountain ridge that separates rivers that are flowing opposite directions.
Zebulon Pike
Went out before Lewis and Clark returned. He explored the Mississippi River, the Arkansas River, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. He explored and wrote about many things. But he entered Spanish territory and was arrested. He was questioned then brought back to USA territory. But all his notes were taken but he remembered enough to write a report that expanded the Americans knowledge of the southwest.
