Chapter 7 Section 2 Flashcards
James Madison
From Virginia. He was very smart in history politics and commerce.
Constitutional convention
Their mission was to remake the articles of confederation. Washington was the president of the convention. The talk was secret.
Alexander Hamilton.
From New York. During the revolution he was Washington’s private secretary. He disposed the articles. He thought the nation needed a strong national government.
The Virginia plan
Made by Madison and Edmund Randolph. Would have three parts, legislative, executive, and judicial. The legislation would have two parts. Both the parts would be based off of population. So bigger states would have more representatives. This was the opposite of the articles which gave each state one vote in congress.
Legislative branch
Would pass the laws
Executive branch
Would carry out the laws.
Judicial branch
Or system or courts, would decide if the laws were carried out fairly.
The New Jersey plan
Made by William Patterson. Would have the same branches as the Virginia plan, but there would only be one house. Also no matter the population of a state, each state would have one vote in legislature.
The great compromise
Made by roger Sherman of Connecticut. Made a compromise of each plan that would satisfy the small and large states. The new plan was that the legislature would have two houses. A lower house, or House of Representatives, would be picked according to the popular vote. As the Virginia plan wanted the lower houses members would be based off of population. People of the upper house, or the senate, would be chosen by state legislatures. Each state would only have two senators. This appealed to the smaller states.
Compromise
Where each side gives up a little of its wants to make both sides happy.
The tree fifths compromise
Where in each southern state only three fifths of the states slaves would be counted so that that state did not get two many more representatives in the House of Representatives that a northern state with no slaves.
