Separation of power
Where the government would divide itself amongst three parts. Legislation, executive,and judicial.the powers of government would be clearly defined
Republic
A government where people ruled themselves through elected representatives
Federalism
The division of power between the states and the national government.
Electoral college
Electors from every states who every four years vote for president and Vice President. Would choose president wisely.
Checks and balances
Where each branch of government has a way to control the other branches. Another way to limit the power of government.

Rejecting a bill
Override overrule a veto to a billion bring charges against and to try and throw the president out of office. If two thirds of senators vote to impeach the president he must leave office.
Impeach
Magna Carta
Limited the power of English rulers. It gave English nobles certain rights, it also made it clear that the government had to follow the law.
English bill of rights
Went further in protecting the rights of the people. Said elections should be held regularly. Reaffirmed the right to trial by jury. Etc.
The mayflower compact.
The first document of self government in North America. The plan was to unite to make civil laws.
The house of burgesses
In 1619 Virginia, set up an elective legislature.
Enlightenment
People who thought they could improve society through the idea of reason.
John Locke
An enlightenment thinker. He started the idea that people had natural rights in life, like life liberty and property. Second he said that government is an agreement between the rulers and the ruled. A ruler must I force laws to protect the ruled.
Baron de Montesquieu
He was also and enlightenment thinker. He urged that government had three branches. (Separation of power)
