SB8e Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What do our bodies need a constant supply of energy for? (3)
.moving
.keeping warm
.producing + breaking down substances
What is cellular respiration?
it is a series of chemical reactions that release energy from glucose.
What does aerobic respiration require and where does it take place?
.requires oxygen
.occurs in mitochondria
Word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
When does anaerobic respiration occur, why and where?
.occurs when strenuous exercise takes place
.the body cannot access the oxygen it needs
.happens in cytoplasm
How do scientists measure respiration rates?
they use a respirometer, which measures the amount of oxygen used and the amount of carbon dioxide given off.
How did we measure respiration rates? (describe our practical, explaining why we used specific equipment/ext)
.we used a simple respirometer to measure the oxygen consumption of maggots and how the rate of repiration depends on temp
.in the simple respirometer we added coloured liquid to measure the rate
.we placed soda lime into the tube beneath the maggots so that it absorbs carbon dioxide as the maggots breathe out
