SB7e Control of Blood Glucose Flashcards
homeostasis?
maintenance of a stable internal environment
what can high and low glucose lead to?
high - cell damage
low - unconsciousness
why is homeostasis important?
prevents damage to the body when internal and external conditions change
what happens when blood glucose levels are low?
the pancreas releases glucagon to the liver in the blood. Glucagon converts glycogen into glucose which is released into the blood and as the blood glucose concentration rises the pancreas releases less glucagon.
what happens when blood glucose levels are too high?
pancreas releases hormone insulin into the blood, which converts glucose to glycogen which is stored in the liver, causing the concentration to fall
causes for type 1 diabetes?
pancreas not producing insulin therefore rising blood glucose levels cannot be controlled
what happens to excess glucose in a diabetic?
excreted in urine
how can type 1 diabetes be controlled?
by injecting insulin into the fat layer below the skin, where it enters the blood
