SB6a Photosynthesis Flashcards
Biomass?
the total mass in living organisms, usually shown as the mass after drying
Photosynthesis?
A series of chemical reactions, catalysed (sped up) by enzymes
State photosynthesis word equation.
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Where does photosynthesis occur?
in chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll that traps energy transferred by light
Is photosynthesis an exo or endothermic reaction?
it is an endothermic reaction, as energy enters from the surroundings
What is made during photosynthesis?
glucose molecules which link to form a polymer called starch
What does the upper and lower epidermis in leafs do?
holds the leaf together and protects
Stoma?
a tiny hole in a leaf through which water vapour and oxygen can diffuse into and out of the leaf. It is opened and closed by two specialised guard cells
What do the guard cells do in light?
become rigid and open the stoma
What do the guard cells do in dark?
lose rigidity and close the stoma
