SB2a Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis split into?
four main stages followed by the splitting of two cells.
What are the stages of mitosis?
(interphase) - prophase - metaphase - anaphase - telophase - cytokinesis - (interphase)
Interphase?
cells spends most of its life in this phase. DNA in the chromosomes copies itself ready for mitosis.
Prophase?
chromosomes condense getting shorter + fatter. Nucleus starts to break down and spindle fibres appear.
Metaphase?
chromosomes line up on the spindle fibres across the middle of the cell.
Anaphase?
chromosome copies are seperated and moved to either end of the cell on the spindle fibres.
Telophase?
chromosomes uncoil and become long and thin again. Membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to form two nuclei.
Cytokinesis?
a cell surface membrane forms to seperate the two cells (leaving two identical daughter cells). Each daughter cell now enters interphase. Cell walls form in plant cells.
Asexual reproduction?
organisms reproducing asexually by producing clones that are genetically identical to the parent. Mitosis is an example.
The offspring in mitosis are?
genetically identical to the parent.
Disadvantage and advantage of asexual reproduction? (2)
.very fast
.doesn’t create genetic variation
Cancer?
disease caused when cells divide uncontrollably and spread into the surrounding tissue because the cells were mutated to be uncontrollable.
What does a diploid nucleus have?
two sets of chromosomes.
Each chromosome in a diploid nucleus is what ?
copied and copies remain attached, forming an X shape.
What does mitosis produce?
two diploid daughter cells.
