What do ships need to prove their safe manning is approved?
A Safe manning certificate which includes vessel particulars, number of crew to be carried and a statement of compliance by the administration.
How does a vessel get a safe manning certificate?
Shipowners make a safe manning assessment and submit to the flag state based on
1. Onboard tasks and responsibilities
2. Fitness for duty and hours of rest for the crew
3. Numbers/grades of crew required to perform 24/7 duties
Flag state then approves the assessment and issues a certificate

What certificates does an AB require?
- AB Deck certificate
- Valid medical certificate
Personal survival techniques - within 5 years
Fire prevention and fire fighting - within 5 years
Elementary first aid
Personal safety and social responsibility

What is a General Purpose Rating?
A rating who has a navigational watch rating certificate and an engine room watch rating certificate
What is the difference between GP1 and GP 2 deck rating?
GP 1 has a AB certificate or has GP2 qualifications which additional 36 months sea service, 12 of which are in the deck department.
